Bars and nightclubs support local artists and provide venues for live music, but to play music publicly, you need a license. For many bar owners, understanding music licensing can be an exercise in frustration. As Congress considers changes to music licensing laws, and the U.S. Department of Justice threatens to remove oversight of performing rights organizations, music licensees should be engaged in the debate about making music licensing easier and bringing transparency to the system.
