Brian Bartels was raised in Wisconsin.  He has been a writer and bartender his entire adult life.  His last book, The Bloody Mary, was published in 2017 with Ten Speed Press, and nominated for an IACP Award.  He now lives in New York City, where he is a Managing Partner and Bar Director for Happy Cooking Hospitality, featuring well-known West Village restaurant and bar destinations Joseph Leonard, Bar Sardine, Jeffrey’s Grocery, Fairfax, and Fedora, connected with the Freehand Hotel (Studio, George Washington Bar, and Simon & the Whale).  His tomatillo-cucumber Green (Bay) Bloody Mary recipe was included in Time-Out New York’s 100 Best Dishes and Drinks 2014.  He’s been featured in Imbibe, Wine Enthusiast, and The New York Times.  His writing has appeared in Fiction Writers Review, PUNCH, Vinepair, the Missouri Review, Lotus-eater and China Grove Press.  His next book, The United States of Cocktails: An American Drink Book, with Tales and Traditions from Every State, will be published in Spring 2020 with Abrams Books.
